Writing and Being Chapter II Exploration: The River of Your Life Dear Journal, I've taken some looks back to early point of my life. I was curious to see what got me to this point in my life and what had me turn out to be the person that I am today. I went back as far as my birth to see or try to notice certain things or events that shaped my personality. Like I said, I went back as far as my birth to figure it out. My birth was most definitely the weirdest thing I've ever experienced, and the worst thing that I probably will ever experience, besides my death, which, so I've heard, is being born backward. Being born was so weird because it happened through a C-section. I was born on January 20, 1982 in a hospital in Chicago Heights, Illinois. I can't remember whether it was night or day. My parents were there, my grandparents were there. It felt weird because I had no idea whatsoever about what was going on at the time or where I was. I didn't even know what people were at the time, either. I thought the people watching over me were weird objects. I'm sure I was crying like crazy because of all the commotion. Then, I went to sleep later after all that and woke up. I was wondering what happened. I might have been in a different room for all I knew then or all I know now. Everything that went on during the first year or so was weird because I didn't know what I was doing or how I was doing it. I'd never experienced it before and didn't know what anything was. From that point on until age ten, about 1992, life was very easy. I didn't have to work for what I wanted, I'd still just have it given to me, in every place but school. But I was a good student who did the work, I just didn't like to do it. For a few years after my birth, my grandmother helped raise me while my mother was trying to attain some degree, Masters, Bachelor's, I'm not sure which. She used to roll me to the park every afternoon in a carriage and always fed

Video Surveillance Cameras

Attempts to monitor employees have always existed in one form or another, from mechanical keystroke counters in the early part of the century, to the latest innovations in electronic monitoring. As technology advances, so do the monitoring possibilities in the workplace. As result of the endless possibilities in surveillance, anxiety in employee†s increase, which in most cases leads to illnesses. Studies have shown that individuals who are constantly being monitored at work suffer from inevitable effects, the majority being illnesses such as physical, emotional, and mental disorders. Employers feel they have the right to monitor their employees, however when extensive monitoring effects a employees health, then the employers has gone to far. Advance technology has lead to monitoring devices such as via computers, video surveillance, and active badges in the last decade, but as the intensity of the surveillance increases so do the negative effects on the employees. There has been a huge increase to pass legislation†s that will regulate the employer in monitoring his employees† by via computer. Monitoring an employee by via computer is one of the latest innovations in electronic monitoring, which is done by purchasing and installing software in the companies computer system. Once the software is installed, it will be able to do a variety of types of electronic monitoring from keystroke counting and accuracy, time how long it takes to make a transaction, and how long the computer has been on idle. This type of electronic monitoring that involves advanced technology and â€Å"the constant monitoring to measure employees† performance creates an enormous amount of pressure and stress†¦ he stress that is created by monitoring has caused serious physical effects† (Ternipsede 447) on employees in the work place. Many employees have been effected from such setting in the workplace, but they are unaware of the effects since they take many years to develop fully. Another type of electronic monitoring that can damage an employee†s health is video surveillance. Video surveillance has existed in the work place since the invention of the television. Video surveillance cameras come in all shapes and sizes, from the obvious ones to some that are small as a dime. Many employers purchase such devices to capture employees and customers who commit theft and fraud, or any other illegal activity. The increase of technology in electronic monitoring is now able to transfer images from a camera to a computer where the employer is able to zoom in and make a positive identity of the employee or customer who is committing an illegal act. This type of monitoring is also to make an employee feel under pressure in hoping â€Å"to enhance employee productivity and quality assurance,† (Ternipsede 447) which serves as a benefit to the employee, employer, and customer. However, many employees do not notice the effects of video surveillance has on their health since there only concern is getting there work done and making their employer happy. One other type of surveillance that causes health risk to the employee is an active badge. Active badges are another type of the latest innovations in electronic monitoring and one of the most controversial types of employee monitoring. The active badges are the size of a credit card that is worn on the outside of the clothing. It keeps track where the employee goes by infrared sensors that are located through out the workplace. Many employer†s who promote this type of electronic monitoring argue that it saves time when having to track someone down. They also argue that it is more of a private way of needing to speak to an employee privately, instead of having to announce their name over the intercom. These active badges also have their negative effects on an employee since they feel entrapped in their workplace because they know that someone else always know where they are. It makes an individual feel like they are in prison, except that they are not secured into their workplace by bars and concrete walls. This type of electronic monitoring is one of the most controversial because it is a new way to invade an individual privacy, without the exception of cameras and monitors. Employers have a right to know whether their employees are on task, however when it infringes on the employees privacy and causes health effects it has gone to far. The employers have the responsibility to hire trustworthy employees and make sure they do their job, not tracking every move they make. As technology advances, business management gets lazier and new monitoring devices pose a threat to employees. The employees well being should be considered before implementing any monitoring systems. Therefore, who knows what electronic monitoring will hold in the future, but will it become so sophisticated that it will cause an employee to choose not to work and live off the government?

The Air Capital Of The World - 1302 Words

In 1928 Wichita began to promote themselves as the â€Å"Air Capital.† Most of the population agrees that Wichita is and always will be the â€Å"Air Capital of the World.† The way that we built the industry is amazing. Yet there are those few individuals who do believe that we should no longer name ourselves as the â€Å"Air Capital.† We have multiple aircraft factories and aircraft is the center of our employment. We have grown our industries and continue to produce more and more aircraft through the decades. By analyzing all the data that was gathered, I will now give a few reasons why Wichita has been named â€Å"Air Capital† in the 1920s and why we will keep that title. The Model 18 â€Å"Twin Beech† aircraft was just what the company needed to boom. It turned Beech Aircraft into a huge corporation. The Staggerwing production was ended in 1946 and replaced by the Beechcraft Bonanza. The first airport began its production in 1930 but was not finished until 1935. Its name was The Wichita Municipal Airport. After seventeen years, the Air force built a base and began to use the airport for their own operations. Also in 1935, the â€Å"world’s most efficient airplane† be gan its production. It was named the Cessna Airmaster. World War II was a huge deal for Wichita s aviation. The population exploded almost overnight. We had around 70,000 new residents within the span of four years. We were drawing in workers from around the state and even outside the state. We were one of the major manufacturing centers for military aircraft. 4.2 bombers were being produced daily in Wichita by 1945. These problems came through a series of international choices made by the governments while facing some international difficulties. Australia has a large exporting milk industry. One of the major importing countries of the milk products sold by Australia was Russia. The sudden change of plans in international scenario led to a series of crisis in the domestic market of Australia affecting the organization, as it was operating in the local market at a large scale. Russia in August of 2014 announced a full trade embargo on agricultural imports. It includes dairy products as well. The reason behind this decision was related to the sanctions referred to the Ukraine conflict. It had a large impact on Australia's export market. Before the ban, Australia exported more than 600,000 tons of dairy products to Russia. This caused a series of problematic symptoms of oversupply in the domestic market, making the price o f milk products sold by the Woolworth go down by a huge margin (Lawrence Richards and Lyons 2013). This situation, in turn, took effect on the farmers operating in the domestic market (Buonanno and Nugent 2013). The company came in a war with the local farmers to survive in the market by slashing its prices. It caused damage to the Woolworths Limiteds public image. The oversupply of milk got worsened by the major decision taken by European Union in the form of removed Quota on milk production (Beetham and Lord 2014). Solution generation: Woolworths now can address these issues both externally and internally. Externally, the higher authorities of the organization can approach the Government of Australia to create a price floor for the dairy products, under which there will be no selling of those products. Internally the firm has to build a stronger forecasting group which will act faster when crises like this appears. The hiring team should keep in mind the opportunity of engaging efficient personnel in all the fields of production in the organization. More efficient worker will produce more effective results in the retail market as well as in other scenarios where public image plays a vital part. The research team will help the forecasting team and the team handling the companys public image. Data collected by the market research team along with the forecasters utility will tell the organization what to produce, how much to produce and to what quantity (Png 2013). This new research team can also extend its support to the research and development team as well. The excess supply of milk can be converted into many other products. The both these teams together can find out the market demand for the new products the domestic and international market holds. The company can share this information with the local farmers for betterment of the supply sources outside the companys raw material supplier circle. This will help the organization as well as the farmers. It will, in turn, improve the public image of the company. The employees who were previously engaged in the export of the dairy products in Europe and Russia have to be employed in a productive process of the company. This will save their jobs as well as reduce the cost of future employee searching operation. By hoarding these skilled workers the company will gain a competitive edge against the rival firms. The external solution needs the higher authorities to take the initiative (Matthews 2013). The government policy makers are looking for answers to solve the present milk crises problem. A price floor will save the farmers who are still fighting in the market for survival. Along with the new faces joining in Woolworths the market research will hit the system (Berglund and Sandstrm 2013). It will reveal the efficient paths of production for the organization. In the mean time, during the first month the workers who were working in the exporting area of the company will be moving to other productive sources. The innovation process will help the company to survive through the coming tough times and stay ahead of the competitors. The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey Josephine Tey's The Daughter of Time is a historical novel that looks at the belief that Richard III, King of England, murdered his two nephews in order to maintain his power. This novel also supports the belief that the ?truth comes out through time.? In the novel the main character, Grant, is concerned with what he believes is a unknown fact of whether or not the long ago King of England was guilty. Throughout his search for the answer Grant discovers many history books which all tend to view Richard in different ways. It is from these different views of the same man, that one can draw the conclusion that bias plays a major role in the validity and credibility of documents and personal accounts. So what is the role and in what ways does the truth come out through time? As historians we must look at what it is that we are reading. In saying this it means we must read between the lines. And not just see the words but where they came from and what the writer is trying to say. As was demonstrated in The Daughter of Time, the documents which Grant read all differed in the way they viewed Richard III. This could have been because the writer's attitudes towards Richard were all different. For example, in the novel, Sir Thomas More's and later accounts of Richard III were derived from John Morton, Richard's bitterest en enemy. Sir Thomas's account was from the view of someone who hated Richard and is therefor considered biased. As a historian it is important to realize that some facets of history are written with a biased opinion and it is our job to realize which ones can be credited and which ones can't. Personal accounts and documents are often overlooked or considered unbelievable because they cannot be considered valid due to the bias opinions of the writer. As historians many find this discouraging because they have no account of what really happened and only have what can be read from the writings of others. In the media bias plays a role in the validity of certain things. An example, just one out of the many, where bias plays a role in the credibility of certain events is the Pocahontas story. With out going into too much detail it is safe to say that the Disney version was very much altered from the real version. When one takes The Daughter of Time and looks closely another name for daughter one may come up with is truth. The truth is what eventually evolves after time. ?The truth comes out through time,? is a statement which this book The Daughter of Time demonstrated very well. It showed how Grant found evidence to support his belief that Richard the III was in fact innocent. It took many years for someone to realize this but that is the role of time in this case. Grant used information from books, which had been written over time, as a basis for his evidence to come to the conclusion that Richard had no reason for killing the boys. Generally speaking the truth comes out through time in everyday events as well. For instance when children go missing what happened to them eventually reveals itself after a period of time. In murders and criminal cases the ?who done it' also takes time to find. As historians ?bias? and ?truth? are two words which have very important meanings. For many the bias which certain accounts are written by are considered very entertaining and allow the reader more insight on what it may have been like, as was seen in The Daughter of Time. But at the same time others find it difficult to distinguish between what you can and can not believe. Bias has a very negative effect on the truth.
